What this case study claims
Design decisions, intended behaviour and the reasoning behind them, plus counts verified against the built product. It does not claim learner outcomes, adoption or improvement: those have not been measured, and describing an intention as a result would be the easiest thing on this page to get wrong.
Overview
A practitioner framework, written and published as its own site at thelearningconditions.com. Its premise is that children mostly do not fail at content — they fail at the conditions around it. It names three: a child must be able to start without an adult present; a child must be able to be wrong without it costing anything; and the adult in the room must know what to say next. The third is the one most resources ignore, and it is the one that decides whether the other two ever happen. This case study describes the framework and links to the site. It does not reproduce its content.
Problem
Most material published for teachers and parents treats learning as a content problem, and responds to difficulty by explaining more clearly, adding practice, or breaking the task down further. That assumption explains why a household can hold a large quantity of good material and still lose a Tuesday evening to it. The failure occurs before the material is opened. A child who will not begin until an adult sits down, or who has learned that a wrong answer costs something, is not reached by a clearer explanation, and neither is an adult who does not know what to say when the child stops. Stating those conditions explicitly is a prerequisite for choosing material at all.

Design decisions
Three conditions, and a refusal to add a fourth
A framework a practitioner can hold in their head is one that gets used in the moment it is needed. Every candidate fourth condition was either a restatement of one of the three or a strategy rather than a condition, and adding it would have cost more in memorability than it added in coverage.
Conditions, not strategies
Each one describes a state that must be true, not an action an adult should take. That distinction matters because a state can be checked against a real resource — can a child actually start this alone? — whereas a strategy can only be performed, and performing it is not the same as achieving it.
The third condition is placed last and named as load-bearing
Starting alone and being safely wrong are both properties of the material. Knowing what to say next is a property of the adult, and it is the one almost nothing is designed for. If it fails, the first two do not survive contact with a real evening.
AI’s role
Minimal, and worth stating plainly. The framework is written; its claims are not generated. Where AI was involved it was in drafting and structural editing of published copy, not in producing the framework’s substance. The site runs no model.
Human judgment
The whole of it. Naming three conditions, deciding which of them is load-bearing, and refusing the fourth are judgements about what a practitioner can carry into a real classroom or a real kitchen — not conclusions that fall out of any evidence base.

Three conditions that have to be true before a child learns anything
The Learning Conditions is a separate site with its own life, maintained apart from this portfolio. It is linked here rather than embedded, restyled or screenshotted.
Challenges
The framework’s difficulty is that all three conditions sound obvious, and agreement is not the same as adoption. Anyone reading them nods. The test is whether a specific resource actually meets them, and most do not — which makes the framework more useful as an audit instrument applied to real material than as a statement people endorse.
Iteration
It is refined against products rather than in the abstract. When a resource fails one of the three conditions, the failure is treated as a design defect in the resource rather than as a reason to soften the condition — which is what keeps the conditions worth having. The clearest applications run through the rest of this portfolio: Math at Home games are built to about three minutes and its printables are black and white so that a child can genuinely start alone; its Check instrument carries no score and one attempt so that being wrong costs nothing; and its guidance for adults explains why rather than what, because that is the only form of help that lets an adult answer the next question.
Reflection
This is the connective tissue of everything else here, and it is the reason the products form a practice rather than a catalogue. It is also the piece with the least measurement behind it: it is a framework, argued from practice, and no claim is made that applying it improves any measured outcome. What can be checked is whether the resources actually meet the conditions they were designed against, and that check is available to anyone who opens the two free units.
